"Historic Mile Markers of Reisterstown Road: Signs of the Past"

What if we told you that two pieces of Reisterstown’s earliest history are hiding in plain sight—right on the side of the road? In this episode, Stacey Abbott from Corner House Realty and Reisterstown Main Street get to meet up with local historian (and all-around fabulous woman) Ann O’Neill to explore just that: two nearly forgotten mile markers that still stand along Reisterstown Road.

With Ann leading the way—armed with photos, notes and a deep love for our town’s past—we tracked down these humble stone posts, weathered by time and nearly invisible to most passersby. Tucked along the roadside, the mile markers once served as vital guideposts, showing travelers their distance from Baltimore and helping to define the route that would become our Main Street.

As cars zipped by, we stood by the markers in awe. How many people have driven past without ever noticing them? These simple stones were once crucial to trade and travel, used by early settlers, stagecoach drivers, and merchants navigating their way through the growing region. Over time, businesses and homes emerged along the route, and Reisterstown began to take shape—mile by mile.

Ann's passion for preserving and sharing local history is contagious, and it reminded us just how much of our town’s story is still out there, waiting to be uncovered—sometimes right at the edge of the road.

So next time you're driving down Reisterstown Road, keep your eyes peeled. You might just catch a glimpse of history—a quiet stone, standing tall, marking not just a mile, but a moment in time.
