A Community Vision Rooted in History and Growth

Tucked in the heart of Reisterstown lies a hidden gem. The Franklin Woodland Trails offer a peaceful place to explore wooded paths, enjoy nature, and experience one of the community’s most special outdoor spaces.

Just a short stroll from Main Street, these trails are being revitalized through the dedication of volunteers, local leaders, and community supporters who believe in preserving natural spaces for recreation, learning, and connection.

The vision is simple but meaningful: preserve this beautiful space, strengthen it over time, and create a welcoming destination for recreation, reflection, and community pride.

The Legacy of Franklin Woodland Trails

The story of the trail system began with a letter to the Board of Education in 1959. In the fall of 1972, Franklin Elementary School Principal Kenneth Mays and sixth grade teacher Carroll Swam surveyed the land and began shaping it into a natural space for learning and recreation.

Sixth grade students helped clear debris and rough walking paths, laying the groundwork for what would become the Franklin Woodland Trails.

In 2018, Jeanne Andrews, a certified Master Naturalist and librarian, helped spark a renewed effort to revitalize the trails. Since then, volunteers have continued improving the space while honoring its original vision.
